Weapons of Mass Destruction

A Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD) is any device that, when triggered or activated, has the potential to kill multiple people and/or do serious property damage. Defined as such, WMDs include bombs and automatic weapons. Of great concern are industry-owned chemicals stored near populated areas and transported by rail, highways, and waterways. Transportation security has been heightened because of the possibility of release of these chemicals by terrorists.

Any WMD in the hands of a terrorist is a serious threat. But WMDs that deliver the most destruction are:

• Chemical
• Biological
• Radiological (bomb wrapped with radioactive waste)
• Nuclear
